The journey
Back in 2014, a group of entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to offer a simplified and accessible online sports betting brand. We took time to build a sports betting platform, which would be accessible to Africans from all walks of life.
Finally, in 2015, the betPawa brand was launched in Uganda, quickly expanding to Kenya the following year. In 2017, betPawa was available in Nigeria and Zambia, with Ghana and Tanzania opening in 2018. Since then, the brand has expanded its African footprint to 12 countries in total and surpassed 10 million registered customers.
In 2022, betPawa established a services hub and headquarters, setting up a 100-person office in Kigali, Rwanda to centralise and support our pan-African Customer Support team. This move was part of a long-term plan to move betPawa HQ into Africa to increase local employment and enhance African ownership.
In conjunction with local franchise takers across the continent, the betPawa brand provides employment to over 300 people.

Customers come first at betPawa, which is why we created PawaDesk. IIt’s how we deliver round-the-clock specialist support and keep communication lines with our customers open.
pawaTech
The pawaTech team builds all of our proprietary software in-house using state-of-the-art technology. This includes embedded digital face recognition software for confirming identity. Everything we create is designed and built specifically with African customers in mind.
Who owns betPawa?
The betPawa brand is owned by Mchezo, a Rwanda-based company. Mchezo is part of a group of companies who combine to bring the betPawa brand and technology to customers in Africa.
In 2022, betPawa began a project giving away $2 million in shares, making 200,000 loyal customers Mchezo shareholders.
betPawa technology is built by pawaTech, based in Tallinn, Estonia.
The pawaTech Group is owned by over 70 private investors who first collaborated through the African early-stage technology fund, 88mph.
